Unfotunately, due
to the inclement weather conditions, only about 30 people braved the wind and
rain to take part in our annual sponsored walk and quiz which this year was held
in association with the Shillingstone Station Project.
The
walk of about six miles departed from the former Somerset and Dorset station at
Shillingstone which is being restored by the North Dorset Railway Trust. The
party headed north to Hammoon then on to Fiddleford Mill and Fiddleford Inn, where
lunch was held. After lunch the walk took them back across the meadows to the
start point at Shillingstone.
On the way, the party was able to
see the impressive new footbridge over the Stour at Fiddleford which when opened,
will extend the railway footpath to Shillingstone and beyond.
Despite
the weather an enyoyable time was had by all. A Treasure Hunt was organised
by Lion Mike Marks as part of the walk. The first prize was shared between
David and Brenda Birt and Moira Stafford, all of Sturminster.
As
an added attraction the members of the Wessex Preservation Club held a classic
car gathering at the Shillingstone station site to coincide with the walk. The
event attracted some 25 cars, (pictured here). Organiser Mike Mark's
red MG can be seen in the foregound.
All
sponsorship monies obtained by the walkers were shared between the Lions and the
walkers own charity preferences.
We
would like to thank all those who took part in the event and hope to see them
again next year albeit in better weather conditions.
